Obama and Change

After the election, we were discussing in class how monumental President-Elect Obama's achievement is and how it changes anything about racial relations.
While I celebrate with our country for taking this big step forward, I cannot help but feel that old prejudices die slowly. I was reading this article in the New York Times about how European citizens and leaders received the news about Obama's election. The writer of this article seems to be impressed by Obama's achievement, but still skeptical about the progress that is still needed.

I think President Obama is a big step towards reducing racism. Even though racism will never totally be gone, having a black president will deffinitley help reduce racism.

I agree. The amount of racism will start to decrease. However, we can't expect for things to change just because of this one thing. I'm not saying it isn't a big step; it is but it has to continue. If nothing happens after Obama's term in office that can make a difference, than it might go back to the way it was.

I also agree that this was a very large step in helping to rid the country of racism. This election shows how far we have come in fighting racism. Years ago having a black president would have been unheard of, now it is a reality. This is a big step forward for our country.

Barrack Obama's win is just going to fuel hateful groups to grow more powerful. I think he's going to work towards peace and after reading about his new cabinet members (people he's putting in charge of stuff) I'm starting to gain confidence in his ability to lead the country to "greatness".
