Stuff White People Like

Now that we're done using Christian Lander's Stuff White People Like in class, I'm curious what you think about his comments regarding the white liberal hipsters of the Northeast. Are the items listed really "true"? How much of what Lander writes is based on observation and how much is hyperbole?

This can very easily fit a lot of groups likes and dislikes which seemingly takes away the "stereotype - like" ideas.

Yea I agree. I think there a few things on the list that aren't true. For example, I disagree with the Barack Obama one. Just because you don't vote for him doesn't mean you're racist. Another one is facebook. A lot of different people use facebook. It's more of a high school or college student thing than a white person thing. Still, I think the list is pretty funny.

So to comment on something white people like.
They like "not having TVs"
Now i can tell you that not having a TV is not something that I would pride myself on. Since the fifth grade I have grown up without cable. I know that i still have a TV, but 31 channels and the Disney channel cannot really count for much. At first i felt like i was kind of separated from my friends, that i was different in some way, and i would literally beg my mom to get it back. Now, it doesn't really phase me so much. I'm actually kind of happy I don't waste my time watching all of those reality shows!

I think this is true and untrue in many ways. I mean just because a bunch of white people like one thing doesn't mean that they are the only ones. Like MOST white people do enjoy coffee, facebook, and Frisbee but you can't say that only white people like those. This reinforces the stereotype of a specific "kind" of white person.

Alot of the stuff white people like I found very funny and somewhat true. Of course this does not apply to all white people, some of them were true to most. However there were a few that I found completely ridiculous but funny such as not having a TV and expensive sandwiches. I don't know many people that do not have a TV but if you don't that doesn't seem like something to be proud of. The list was very funny to me I dont think it was meant to be serios. Some of them made alot of sense and some of them made no sense.

Being a "white" person I would have to say 98% of that is true. I can't even begin going into detail because I wouldn't know where to start. Basically, I skimmed through the list and said, "omg, he knows me like a book!". I think most of these stereotypes are based on observation by the way. None of these are like "where did that come from? That's not true!" All of them are "in good taste" too which makes it acceptable and funny.

After reading the book I think that this book isn't stuff that white people like, but actually stuff that people in general like. In the back of the book there was a section asked "how white are you". I scored around 25-30% white, while non-white friends of mine were scoring into the 60-80 percentile. This book doesn't seem to be defining white people, but maybe is suppose to be Stuff white people should like. There were also some items on the list which seemed to be more regional than racial. For example I can guarantee for a fact that very few white people in New Jersey are Boston Red Sox fans, since North Jersey tends to be majorly Yankee/Mets fans, while in South Jersey you have Phillies fans.

Honestly, I thought the list was good for a laugh. Many of the things on the list can be considered true, which only adds to the comedy. And even if its not, the list was meant as a joke, not serious evaluation. This won't create a stompede of anger and racism, so it shouldn't have that big of a reaction. It should be taken at face-value, merely humorous observation.
