How Much Do We Value Art
To what extent should the government providing funding for arts & culture? Some comparisons: the city of Berlin spends 7 times more per citizen (approx. $250 per person) on arts & culture than the US does. The US Budget for the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities total approx. $300 million dollars; Dept. of Education--$58 billion; Defense--$639 billion; Labor--$52 billion; Health & Human Services--$699 billion; Transportation--$67 billion.

When i was in Seattle over the summer... i found out that at least 1% of a buisness' profits in the city is required by law to go to art in or around the buisness. This includes stadiums, hotels, and everything.
The amount of money our government spends on art and culture should increase after comparing the amounts spent on art and other ventures, like education and security. But I don't think that the arts should be a major focus for our budget. I don't mean to sound offensive, but when compared to national security or health services, art is not as important. All the same, the amount alloted to the arts should increase, just not by so much.
I would agree with the last comment. Art is not important compare to the other needs like education, labor, and defense. Right now in a trouble economy, money needs to be spent wisely, and I think people would like to have food on their tables or be able to keep their homes over having a picture to look at. In fact, some of that $300 million dollars can be put to better use like increasing food stamps for the needy or helping out some small business. Is art important, only to an extent, because when you look at it, art is nice, but I rather am in a society that is educated, advance, and strong.
