On Happiness

okay... so i decided to do an interesting 'experiment'/survey (whichever you prefer to call it).
with the help of Baker (guy i work with) we came up with this question -
"is society generally more happy or unhappy".
so i surveyed 50 people - random customers at work, other mall employees, and three family members - all different races, ages, status, income, etc. and asked them that question and recorded the results in my journal. so i thought i would post the question -

IS society generally more happy or unhappy - and why?

that sounds like a cool experiment what were the results you got? I think you should experiment more and pick like a bunch of random people

A) As a Stat student, I am slightly skeptical about the way you conducted your survey--not because I doubt you, but because I learned so much about what EVERYONE does wrong when conducting an experiment. It's not a diss--my group still had some errors conducting a simple orange juice survey. But whatever. Your results aside...
B) I think, now this is really complicated, but I'll take a shot. Okay, I think American society on the exterior is happy. But underneath I think people are generally unhappy. However, we don't like to portray ourselves as such so we put on smiles that we may or may not realize are fake and go about our lives. It's just a theory, but I'm working on it. I mean, all you ever hear about are people trying to lose weight, or score higher on their SATs or get better grades or a better job, make more money, live THE good life. And there's a difference between living THE good life and living A good life. Truly happy people would be content living A good life--their idea of happiness and as close to their idea of perfection as possible. People pressured by society tend to focus on living THE good life--society's idea of a perfect life. The white picket fence, owning a house, being married, having the average 2.6 kids or whatever the number is now... And some people can live against this ideal, but a lot of people feel pressured by those around them to be the perfect American instead of just the best American they can be. So... definitely unhappy under the exterior of it. Then there are people who live their lives oblivious to it all because in their ignorance they know nothing else.

Anna I agree with you on part B. People want things to be perfect so they can be what they think is happy but nothing and no one is perfect. People always want to feel like they are better then someone else and sometimes to get the feeling they want to make someone feel bad about them selves. I dont really think that has anything to with society really ut thats how I'm starting to see the world now

I personally think that society is more "unhappy" because we expect too much. There is always room for improvement and we are never satisfied. Nobody will ever agree on a project or change in the community, and those unhappy people will certainly take a stand and cause conflict. Not that it's bad- it's just reality. We all oppose things in our society I think and those people override the "happy" people.

We all say we're ready for a change and when it comes we'll let it happen but then when that change really comes we're not ready and we dont want a change that what happened throughout our recent elections we made history some people are happy with the new change and some people aren't happy the people who aren't happy with how society is going is the people who dont want change to happen and want things to always be the same

I think that society wants to be happy on the outside but in reality underneath eveyrthing it is unhappy with what we have become.

Society is more "unhappy" for sure yet we don't realize that we don't have anything to be "unhappy" about. Things could easily be a lot worse but since we haven't experienced these "worse" things, we believe bad things that happen to us to be the worst and therefore we are constantly unhappy. People find it easier to be unhappy because there are more things to complain about then to enjoy. Happiness makes life simpler but people don't realize this and go on being unhappy.

I say society is always more unhappy, or at least America is. It is always “why did you not get me the bmw?” I feel like if your parents are nice enough to get you a car you should be grateful. I for one who had to pay for his almost broken 93 Camry am grateful I had enough money to get it. My parents giving me 10 bucks a week for gas is more than enough to satisfy my needs, but almost everyone in America is spoiled.

I think society is happy when we're happy or if we like something but society is unhappy also when we're unhappy or hate something anything we do reflects how our society works it can be good or bad it feels like more bad things are happening because people stop caring get more people who actually care what is happening and we can have a happy society

I think most people are unhappy. There are reasons why we see every other commercial for ways to improve ourselves, whther its our body or our face or etc...people always want to improve...not only that but take into account all those less fortunate countries. I have a hard time seeing how any of them can be happy with starvation, war, disease, and other factors. If we can't even be happy in the greatest country in the world, how can anyone else be happy.

I think that society is generally unhappy. We are always tring to improve ourself to what we think is the "best." Everyone wants the best car, the best body, the best hair, the best cloths, the best friends, the best boyfriend/girlfriend, the best house, the best family, and the list goes on and on. In the materialistic society that we live in most people are never satisfied with what they have even if it's more than most people have. Its very sad.
