Prisoners of the Bell

Whoever came up with the lyrics, let freedom ring, clearly wasn't thinking about the school bells. If you think about it, it's scary how much of our freedoms we give up when we walk into school in the morning. First, school starts at an ungodly early hour, and all day we are regulated by bells telling us when to go to class. We can't wear anything we want, we surely can't say anything we want. Doing, wearing, or saying something deemed inappropriate results in detention or harsher punishment. We can't even learn what we want--we are always subjected to take tests and complete assignments for classes most of us don't even want to take. Loss of freedom is especially apparent during fitness days in gym. They blow the whistle and we all run like cattle. I've heard that education sets you free, and that may be true. But the venue for getting that education more closely resembles a prison than a liberating environment. What do you think about this? Is it ok that are freedoms are put on hold when we come into school?

I agree with that our freedom is put on hold when we go to school the only freedom we have in school is the choice to pick our classes and then the things we want to take in gym our only free time really in school is lunch and we don't even have complete freedom there not only with teachers watching us but the camera's too to some people school can seem like prison but how can someone compair school to prison if they never went to prison?

I definitely agree that school is similar to prison on many levels. We move when the bells say to, learn what we have to, and do as teachers and administrators say. However I think it is all for our benefit in the long run. If we didn’t act this way we would not get any smarter or learn proper behavior. Instead of cattle moving in an orderly fashion, we would transform into wild beasts doing as we please. I think the knowledge and social skills we learn in school are only instilled to benefit us in the long run. School is a prison I sure can’t wait until I’m set free but I am embracing the time spent here. You have the rest of your life to make your own decisions and do what you want. Might as well enjoy teenage years while we have them.

even wild beasts are free though. i'd rather be a wild beast than a regimented cow or ox, just following the herder.

I think once you hit senior year you stop caring and I admit I stopped caring too its senior year most of us cant wait to get of school so we can be free or what we think is free if you think about it once we leave school imagine how much freedom we'll have and we won't know what to do with that freedom some people might wish they were back in school where maybe to them they felt free some of my older friends are always telling me that they miss high school and I should enjoy it while I can. I cant say agree since I'm still in high school but most of us are all ready getting a taste of the real world by getting jobs having cars making our own money most of us are going to colleges where we'll live in dorms and we might take advantage of that freedom. So is too much freedom or good or bad thing?

As bad as it may sound, I believe it is necessary for us to give up some of our freedoms and put them on hold when we go to school. I think that as a young child, we did not fully understand and comprehend the freedom we have. If we were allowed to do anything we wanted and be completely free, school would be a very chaotic place. We need rules to keep order in a place where we are getting an education. Without rules or limits, school would be a hard place to learn anything from.

I think it is somewhat a bad thing. In these classes we are taught about how people have gained freedom and how we fight to protect it. In school they take some of those away. However, like Andy said, we do need to maintain order for school to properly function. Not only that, losing some freedom prepares us for certain situations like a in a job, because we would have to most likely follow a similar code of conduct.

School is like prisoner because the security guard are the teacher and if we do anything we would get punish. In school we get punish by detention, iss, oss suspenion and more. The different is that we dont waste our time we actually learn things there. There is different clicks like jail too. If you mess up you will get what you deserve.

School may seem really strict and prison-like, but it's really not as bad as it seems. Prison is a place people go as a result of committing a crime. School should be a place where you want to learn. So comparing the two really doesn't seem to make sense. And there's good reason as to why there are bells and consequences in school. What would school be like without them? No one would actually go to class and if someone does something bad, how would he/she know not to do it again? And the subjects are chosen for us because it's agreed upon society that they're the building blocks of a better education. Our school still gives us certain choices like electives. No one forced you to take photography, psychology or humanities right? So I don't think our freedom is being put on hold at all. We still have as much freedom we had before we walked into the building. There are just boundaries to control the environment.
