the tree does sound

ok so the whole question of does a tree make a sound if it falls and no one can hear it thing, well it kind of pisses me off. because it most certainly makes a sound. why, you ask? well think about it scientifically. now im not the most scientific person but i do know that air is a medium, and therefor sound travels through it in waves, and hits other surfaces and travels etc. so if a tree were to fall in space, no one would hear it because there is nothing sound can travel through in space. but-here, on earth, if a tree were to fall, it would make a sound because sound will travel through air. its like asking the question "if a cell phone is on silent mode, does it really recieve calls and messages?" well, yea, if a cell phone is on silent, it will most certainly still recieve messages.

sound is defined by vibrations/waves which stimulate the body's organs (the EAR). so if there is nobody there - (therefore - no ears)- it is not technically a sound.
so really - if a tree fell in a forest and there was nobody there - it would not make a sound.

but for me - i think - who cares if there is a sound or not?
and then - nobody was there so how would we even know that the tree fell?

robyn, if a tree falls down in space, it will still make a sound b/c sound can travel through the earth. air is not the only medium that sound can travel through. It can travel through air, liquids or solids.

This question always annoyed me, but it's funny to hear other people's responses. Of course, a tree falling makes sound even if there is no one there to hear it. Sound travels through the molecules in the air. The sound waves bounce off the molecules as it travels. The idea that a tree when it falls cannot be heard because there is no one to hear it is absurd. But it's still funny to hear people's responses since they ponder so much about the answer.

Thank you for finally saying this. Of course a tree makes a sound and it doesn't matter if anyone is there to hear it. If it makes noise when somebody watches this happen, why wouldn't it make a noise if noone was around? People think way to logically into this when they shouldn't.
I like what alexbobalex said about not being able to know if a tree fell since nobody was around.

Ok, maybe waves flow through the air and bounce off nearby trees or whatever, but sound is when sound waves bounce off the EAR. If there is nobody is there to perceive the tree falling, then it could not exist as sound, only vibration.

All that sound is, is vibrations through a medium, without humans to perceive it, when the tree fell, would make vibrations, but "sound" as we know it, could not exist, since nobody was there to perceive and transduct those vibrations.

Somebody please agree with me...

Personally I think it makes a sound. Why, you may ask? Well, it all rests in the fact that no one was there. Since no one was there to witness the event and record any audible consequences, no one knows what really happened... or if it did happen for that matter (like what alexbobalex was saying). This brings into question what makes something a reality. I think it is all in someone's belief of a truth. I believe the tree made sound, therefore it did.

Besides, no one was there to actually prove it did make sound, so I win.

It makes a sound in general... but no ones there to hear it. Its most definetly like if a kid is stuck somewhere in the a third world country and no one could hear him from miles away because he was stuck in a plain where no animals or insects were... he really made a sound.. but of course the human himself can make a sound so he can make a sound. If a house fell down in a plain hundreds of miles where no one could hear it... it makes a sound so if a tree falls it makes a sound. anything makes sounds because everything gives off frequency so yes, it makes tons of sounds. Just not to the human ear because it is so far away.

ahhhh physics! i think that if a tree falls in space it would make a sound because sound travels through air, liquids and solids. the sound waves travels through space.

That boy in a third world country (creative example)would make a sound because he has ears and his ears would perceive the sound!

Without a doubt a tree makes a sound when it hits the ground. How could it not make a sound, anytime a tree falls and somebody sees it, it makes a sound so just because nobody sees it why would it not make a sound?

I think a tree deffinitely makes a sound when if falls down. Even if a person is not their to see the tree fall down it is still making a sound.
