After reading "I'm Not Fat I'm Latina," our class discussed the article. The author said that at Latino clubs, she got much more attention than her thinner friends. Boys in my class said that she probably said that just to make herself feel better because most guys don't actually like girls with curves. Here's an example of how that is sooo wrong...

hey! i totally agree with your comment! i do not think she was making excuses in any way... she was really telling the truth.
yup... so that is my opinion...
Something happened in my class that made me really angry and very surprised!
After reading the essay, which in my opinion deals with a very sensative subject and pretty important one considering the state of our society, on the one end where obesity is reaching an all time high, and the other end of the spectrum where teens are dying or making themselves severly ill from anorexia. In our one minute around, people were responding with comments like "she is a fatass" or like you guys mentioned, "25 pounds is not much, she needs to just stop making excuses". I really think that it is comments like these that push people to these extremes! We all come from different cultures, different areas of the world where body types and eating habits differ. The lack of acceptance or even understanding in this country pushes people to feel like outsiders which then triggers emotions which will probably cause them to do one of two things: just eat more for comfort, therefore creating the endless cycle of eating because you are sad, but the reason you are sad is because of your weight. Or to the other category of people, the ones that starve themselves to the point of "beauty" or at least what our society accepts as beuty. Seeing this in the classroom, on a much smaller scale really hit me and showed how these standards are created. It shows the intollerance. To some it may be a joking matter, but you really dont know how your words are going to affect others. i know that in the essay she says she is over the "healthy weight limit" but does that automatically make her fat? That word is just tossed aroud like it has no meaning.
If you guys remember that paper we were given in the first few days of class, the standard of beauty has gotten thinner and thinner throughout the years. But looking at the first picture, being fat by our standards didnt have a negative meaning, it showed fertility and to them, that was beautiful. I'm not saying we should all try and look like that, but focusing our energy to all look the same, is a waste of time!
Jenn, it was the same thing in my class, and even with people who i talked to afterwords. Unfortunately, there are ignorant individuals in the world... and it is so sad that with all of this talk since like kindergarten about accepting others and loving yourself, that others can so easily sit there and trash a girl they had never seen before. What if this girl actually was pretty skinny... but had a significant problem with her body image? i personally find that everyone comes from their own cultures, views, and problems, and NOBODY has the right to judge another based on looks alone.
