Jack and Locke Discuss Fate/Destiny
After I decided to take a break from thinking of what to do for the Unit 5 Journal assignment, I watched Lost that I DVRed from Wed. 2/25. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Jack and Locke talk about fate. And Voila, I had something to post for my Journal! Was it fate that this episode would involve destiny and fate or just mere coincidence? The "fate" part starts at 6:15. If you are not a Lost Fan, then the situation is this: Lock (bald guy) is trying to convince Jack (other guy) to go back to the island. Locke says it's their destiny to go back, but Jack doesn't believe in fate. Who do you feel you side with?

In terms of lost, we know that everything has already been planned out. Things have happened because they were supposed to happen. John Locke is the new "leader" of the island becuase he went back in time and told richard to find him in the future. Danielle didn't go in the whole and therefore didn't get "Sick" because Jin told her not to(assuming one of those other french dudes weren't smart enough to have a pregnant girl follow a smoke monster). We know that John Locke is right, everything happens for a reason. I loved that line in 316 where jack said to locke when he was putting the shoes on him in the coffin "wherever you are john, you must be laughing your ass off." This shows that Jack has finally realized and admitted that John has been right, and he should've believed him. (I LOVE LOST WAY TOO MUCH!!!)
Anyway, as for me and in reality, i am more of a man of science for i can come up with an explanation for everything but i also believe we all control our own destiny and have no greater influences in our lives. We are responsible for the decisions we make.
In terms of believing in fate or science I believe in a combined way of both ideas, which to me seems most logical.I believe that your actions and your decisions do determine your outcome, but I believe that sometimes there is some calling to you. During the college search some colleges we looked up seemed just plain wrong for us, while some colleges seemed to be calling us to them and made us want that college so badly. In the end the college decision is yours alone, but you do notice some colleges calling to you more than others though.
i believe in fate and that everything happens for a reason. the decisions that you make in life affects the outcome. you choose whatever path you want to take, just choose the right one because one little mistake could just screw you over. in lost, things have happened because they were supposed to happen it was all planned out. some people have been off the island for a while already because of the time traveling.
i believe in fate but only to a certain extent. i think everything happens for a reason but because of an action you choose to do. if something is destined to happen no matter what choice you make eventually it will happen anyway. Maybe it's a cause and effect kind of thing? The choices we make can either make our fate take longer or speed it up. It can also effect how easily we get something or help us learn a lesson.
I am a very strong believer in everything happens for a reason. While i think lost is a good example of this, being that all passangers on board this certain plane were somehow all chosen to crash on that island, i do not think it is a good choice for the reality aspect. Lost can never be seen as is this reality. In no other setting can an island exist but no one can ever find it on a map, radar, or flying over head. An island can also not relocate completely with a turn of a crank. There was another episode where a character Danielle was talking about their existance on the island. Maybe lost gives people a false reality of an island of their own that cures all problems and is away from the rest of the world. But whatever the the case lost encompasses reality, existance, time and daily life all in one show.
It could be argued that what the survivors are experiencing in the timeline is the first time around for them. The show seems to be suggesting that certain events have caused other events (causality), but that these events may be taking place due to different causes. For example, we heard Hurley on the transmission to the French, but was he the original person to broadcast he numbers? Jin stopped Rousseau from going into the temple, but maybe Rousseau stopped herself originally. Therefore, the end results are fated, but the choices made to get to them are examples of free will. The show also seems to suggest that the end result of what could happen to the island (something disastrous it's been implied), is NOT determined, that there is some wiggle-room to either save/doom everything. Which is confusing, because how can certain elements of a timeline be fated or destined if the final moments of the timeline are still uncertain? The show also suggests it's all or nothing. Science or faith. Logic and Chaos or Order and Belief? Are the events of Lost pre-determined or up to the choices of the individuals? I don't think this is ever going to be answered, though. Lost is designed to ask its viewers to explore these questions in their own life, not to necessarily answer those same questions.
One other thing I'm really enjoying about the program this season, is its suggestion that all of the "fated" moments have been decided by those very same characters in the past. Great example - we assumed Richard gave Locke the compass, but he didn't! Locke gave Locke the compass. No one originally gave Locke the compass except Locke! I think we're going to see more examples of this as we steer to next year's series' finale.
